Tabby Spanx

I remember when I first saw this on an episode of SNL, I laughed so hard.  Not only does fat kitty in the skit resemble Duke, but I could see both D&C in Tabby Spanx.  If you haven’t seen it yet, YouTube “baby spanx on snl”.

Still, just seeing this picture cracks.me.up…  LOL…

Fat cat, fat cat

Today, Duke and Carter went to visit their friends at Springhurst Animal Clinic for their annual exams.  Duke did great at the vet.  He was his usual take-charge self.  After his shots, he decided he needed a quiet, private place to rest, so he opened up the cabinet and went inside.

Carter was also good at the vet.  He was a little bummed after his shots, so he put himself to bed to rest in his crate.

Overall both boys were happy and healthy.  The vet kept saying how beautiful and good they were (making me a proud momma), but…  and it is no big secret, they are overweight.  Duke has only gained a few ounces since last year.  He went from mid-15lb to right at 16lb.  Carter’s weight gain was a little more disconcerting – he gained a full pound.  He is now right at 17lb… my poor, sweet, fat little prince.

Needless to say, both boys are starting a new diet tomorrow.  The vet recommended a high protein food by Taste of the Wild  (http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/), so after work tomorrow, I will pick it up.  I will blend it into their food while decreasing the quantity for the next couple of weeks, and then they’ll each be on 1/2 cup of the new food a day.

They’ve always been big boys, but at their last couple of annual exams, the vet’s goal was to have them stay at their current weight, not to lose weight.  This is the first year that the vet wants them to lose weight.  D&C are very particular about what they eat and how often, so I think this is going to be a challenge, maybe more of a challenge than toilet training.  We’ll see…  stay tuned!

Back to Square One

I think the time has come to stop pretending Carter will magically catch up with Duke.  I cannot deny it any longer.  The bathtub has become Carter’s litterbox, and while that is better than the carpet or wood floors, it is not okay.  It is actually pretty gross, even if it is the in the guest bathroom.  Still bad.

I’m going to take a few steps back and start the LK process over.  This is what LK recommends doing when one cat falls behind.  Knowing Duke, this is not going to impede his progress.  He is still my smart little toilet-user, but hopefully starting over will give Carter a chance to join him.  Carter sure is cute…

Same ol’

Nothing new to report:  Duke is using the LK.  Carter is using the bathtub.  Albie’s Albie.  Love them all.  Looking forward to some QT with them at home this weekend.  Hopefully we can work on some behavior modification with lil C.

Words of Wisdom

Wise words from Albie, and in our case, Carter the Cat too…

Duke the Great

I always knew Duke was a genius.  He’s my little cat-man.  He’s sophisticated, smart, and vocal.  He knows what he wants and how to get it…  Duke also knows how to USE THE TOILET ALL BY HIMSELF!!!

I was in the guest bathroom working on the LK with Carter (after he had gone in the bathtub), and I came into my bedroom just in time to see Duke walking out of my bathroom.  No big deal, that’s where his food is, and he likes to drink out of the faucet.

Then I saw the toilet seat was up and he had used it!!!  How exciting!!!

But they say “a team is only as good as its weakest player”, and unfortunately for us, Carter is our weakling when it comes to potty training, and we’re not ready to celebrate an all-around potty training victory.  I don’t know why Carter is still using the bathtub, but I have to figure out a way to help him stop.

I’m thinking about getting a natural stain and odor remover specifically for cats like this:  http://www.ilovenaturesmiracle.com/catalog/prod_detail.php?id=13, except I’m worried if he stops using the bathtub that he will find somewhere else in the house to go…  and with new hardwood floors and new carpet (I had the whole condo redone in March), that is the last thing I want.

If anyone with LK experience or general cat experience has any ideas for little C, please let me know.  I don’t want to hold Duke back, but we can’t progress with the rest of the process until Carter is ready.  I know it can take some cats years to learn, but they’re brothers… they do everything else together and at the same time.  Why not potty training?!?

Small Victories

Duke and Carter check out the new ring.  The hole is quite a bit larger than the last, and they can see everything going on in the toilet, but they can’t fit their head inside so they sit and watch from above…

While Duke immediately gets to work taking care of business…

My sweet Carter baby would rather play with the box of litter.  Sigh.

What am I going to do with him??  We did celebrate a little victory this morning waking up to a clean bathroom!  Hopefully it will last the whole day while we’re at work.  He is adorable though, isn’t he?!

These victories may be small, but we’ll take them, celebrate them, and share them on the blog!  They’re like baby, or er kitten steps, on the right track.  Hopefully there will be many more in our future!
